Male Chin Augmentation in Dallas, Texas-
World-class Plastic Surgeon, Dr. John Burns
Many patients complain of having a weak chin or jaw which is out of proportion to their face.
The chin should always be evaluated together with the nose and teeth. The surgeon needs to recognize when improperly aligned teeth may complicate the problem. In these cases, the teeth may need to be addressed with orthodontics or oral surgery before augmenting the chin.
There are both surgical and non-surgical options to address a weak or recessed chin. The options are detailed below.
Why Do Men Want Chin Augmentation?
More and more men are getting procedures to optimize their youthful appearance and well-being to present their best selves to the world, resulting in greater confidence through more balanced facial proportions.
Chin augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure for men that can address various concerns related to the chin and jaw area which are very important in male facial aesthetics. Both non-surgical and surgical chin augmentation can contour and handsomely emphasize the male jawline and neck.
What Is Male Chin Augmentation?
Male Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure designed to enhance facial balance and harmony by addressing concerns related to the chin, jaw, and neck areas.
In male facial aesthetics, a strong and defined chin and jawline are key features that convey masculinity and are often emphasized to achieve this balanced look.
Men with a weak or recessed chin may feel self-conscious about their appearance, as a less defined jawline can be perceived as lacking the strength or assertiveness associated with a more prominent chin.
Chin augmentation patients, particularly men, often seek this procedure to achieve a more square and masculine facial shape, which contrasts with the typically heart-shaped ideal of female facial aesthetics. By enhancing the chin, the procedure helps to create a more balanced and harmonious appearance that aligns with traditional masculine ideals.
How Far Should the Ideal Male Chin Project?
Profile View
When viewed from the side, an aesthetically balanced chin in men typically aligns vertically with the lower lip or slightly behind it. This alignment can be assessed by drawing a vertical line from the base of the nose down. The chin should ideally fall on or close to this line.
Proportional Balance
Some facial aesthetic guidelines use the "golden ratio" to assess chin projection, suggesting that the lower third of the face should be roughly equal in length to the middle third. If the chin is under-projected (receding) or over-projected (prominent), it can disrupt this balance.
Reasons Men Want Chin Augmentation
Stronger, More Masculine Profile
Chin augmentation can significantly enhance a man's chin profile and lower face contour. It can create a stronger and more masculine jawline, improving the overall balance and harmony of the male facial aesthetic.
Ask A QuestionConfidence Boost
An increasing number of men are choosing procedures to enhance their appearance, health, and overall well-being. By choosing chin augmentation, men can showcase their best selves to the world, resulting in improved confidence and self-esteem. A strong chin and jawline exude confidence and vitality, which can be advantageous in the workplace where men strive to maintain a competitive edge.
Balanced Facial Profile
Research shows that both men and women are naturally drawn to symmetrical faces, which are perceived as more beautiful. This preference extends beyond romance, as people also tend to be attracted to friends and allies with symmetrical faces. A weak or receding chin can disrupt the balance of facial features, but chin augmentation can help create a more harmonious and proportionate facial appearance.
Well-Defined Neck Contour
When a chin augmentation is performed, it not only enhances the appearance of the chin but can also have a positive impact on the neck profile. This procedure helps shape the chin, making the neck appear more sculpted and defined. Typically, chin augmentation is combined with neck liposuction or a neck lift to slim and lift the neck and midface. Creating a well-defined neck profile accentuates the chin and jawline, giving the impression of a more youthful and athletic appearance.

Chin and jawline augmentation can be done surgically or non-surgically. Many men will opt for a nonsurgical approach before embarking on a more permanent solution.
Dermal Fillers
Types of Fillers Used
Bony augmentation requires more robust or viscous fillers. These fillers are placed close to the facial skeleton and provide more volume than thinner, less viscous fillers. The best fillers for male chin and jaw augmentation are Juvederm Volux, Juvederm Voluma, and Restylane Lyft. Volux in particular is FDA-approved for chin and jaw augmentation and is a favorite among men in our Dallas plastic surgery pracctice.
How It's Performed
Dermal Filler injections are a simple procedure done in an office or clinic setting. Treatment areas are numbed with a topical anesthetic cream and then filler is injected to balance and define the area. Often, chin and jawline definition requires more volume to elicit a more well-defined facial structure, 2 - 4 syringes are necessary depending on the amount of correction needed.
Recovery
After getting an injection, there is usually some mild swelling and minimal bruising, but it should go away within a day or two. Dermal fillers are an excellent option for busy men who may need to sneak an appointment in over their lunch or ahead of a busy weekend.
How Long Does It Last?
Chin fillers last between 12 and 24 months.
Fat Augmentation
How It's Performed
Using fat to augment and shape the chin is an ideal option for some men who want more permanent results but aren't quite comfortable with getting a chin implant. Chin augmentation with fat requires a bit more planning since it involves liposuction, but many men appreciate the two-fold benefit of body slimming and chin contouring.
In Dr. Burns' practice, chin augmentation with fat is routinely done in conjunction with other procedures like abdominal etching, male rhinoplasty, a facelift, and eyelid lift.
Fat is first harvested using liposuction. The harvested fat is then washed and centrifuged to purify the fat. For chin or jaw augmentation, fat is typically not strained but used whole. It is injected to sculpt and define the chin while balancing the facial anatomy. The chin and jawline are typically over-filled within reason as some of the fat is expected to be reabsorbed by the body during healing. Fat can last up to 5 years, making it a nice option for men who want the benefits of chin augmentation without having to make frequent trips for dermal filler touch-ups.
Fat injection does require a larger needle to inject and for this reason, may have more bruising and swelling. However, the recovery for fat transfer is relatively short.
How Long Does It Last?
Up to 5 years in most cases.
Chin Implant
Anatomical Implants Used
If a more permanent and powerful treatment is preferred, genioplasty surgery with a chin implant is a simple and effective procedure to provide permanent chin and/or jaw augmentation. Chin implants are solid implants, unlike gel-filled breast implants. These implants come in small, medium, and large sizes depending on how much augmentation is desired. 3D imaging can be used to simulate the procedure and help with choosing the perfect size. Most men prefer the medium or large size whereas women generally prefer the small size.
Chin implants can also be extended onto the jawline for jaw augmentation. These implants, while longer, are still easily placed.
Chin augmentation requires an incision to place the implant. This incision can be done inside the mouth or under the chin. Both ways provide virtually imperceptible incision and excellent access to the surgical site.
How It's Performed
A small incision is made inside the mouth or just under the chin. A blunt instrument called a periosteal elevator is used to raise soft tissue off the bone. A “pocket” is made just slightly larger than the implant. The custom chin implant is placed in the correct position on top of the chin and jaw bone and secured with a suture. The incision is then closed and the area is splinted.
Recovery
The recovery from the chin implant is minimal. Most men will have some swelling for the first month or so. The mouth incision requires a soft diet for about a week. Care should be taken not to move or touch the chin as it heals. Most people can return to work in a day or two with some swelling. Many people have some numbness in the lower lip for several months as it heals.
How Long Does It Last?
Chin implants are permanent and once healed do not need to be replaced.
Final Results
Once placed, chin implants are immobile and should stay in place. Swelling is generally limited but can persist for several weeks.
Are The Results Permanent?
Yes. Chin implants do not move once placed. There is no need to remove or replace a chin implant.
Can You Do A Chin Reduction Instead of A Chin Augmentation?
Yes, this is a less well-known procedure, but equally effective for balancing the face. Some men have an overly prominent chin. Using similar incisions, the bone can be reduced by either cutting the bone or, more commonly, using a "burr" to file down the natural chin bone to the correct dimensions.
Other Procedures For Jawline And Chin Contouring
Neck Lipo
Neck liposuction is a popular surgical procedure for men who desire a more defined jawline and neckline. It is often performed in conjunction with a neck lift or facelift. VASER® ultrasound lipo is commonly used to ensure smoother and better results and can be combined with FaceTite radiofrequency for additional skin tightening. Both are outpatient procedures with minimal downtime.
Neck Lift
For men battling excessive neck skin or platysma bands, a neck lift is necessary to remove the extra skin and tighten the platysma muscle in the neck. Small incisions are made around and behind the ears to remove excess skin and enhance the neck and jawline. The platysma muscle is tightened through an incision below the chin. A neck lift is often combined with neck liposuction to address excess fat, skin, and loose muscles for optimal results.

Male Facelift
In male facelift procedures, the goal is to achieve natural-looking results with subtle changes. A facelift is necessary to address the effects of gravitational aging on the face, such as sagging skin and fat, midface laxity, prominent nasolabial folds, marionette lines, jowls, and loss of neck contour. Incisions are strategically placed around and behind the ears, as well as under the chin to minimize visibility. Special attention is given to the male hairline due to male pattern baldness, receding hairline, and shorter hairstyles. The deep plane or SMAS is always addressed in surgery to ensure longer-lasting and natural results.
