What Is A Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a comprehensive and personalized cosmetic surgery procedure designed to address the physical changes that often occur in a woman's body following pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. This transformative surgical approach typically combines various aesthetic techniques to target multiple areas simultaneously, such as the abdomen, breasts, and sometimes other regions affected by the effects of childbirth.

Common components of a mommy makeover may include abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast augmentation or lift, liposuction, and other body contouring procedures such as a Brazilian butt lift. The goal is to restore and enhance a woman's pre-pregnancy physique, providing a holistic solution to the physical changes that can impact self-esteem and body confidence after the challenges of motherhood.

Types of Procedures Involved

A mommy makeover typically involves a combination of cosmetic procedures tailored to address the specific post-pregnancy changes in a woman's body. The key is to tailor these procedures to each woman as there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The most commonly performed procedures in a mommy makeover include:

Tummy Tuck

To address loose abdominal skin and muscle laxity, a tummy tuck is almost always included. This procedure removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to restore a firmer and flatter abdomen.

Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, or Breast Reduction

Breast procedures are equally common in a mommy makeover to address changes in breast shape and volume. Breast augmentation may involve the use of implants, a breast lift can lift and reshape sagging breasts, and breast reduction can reduce the size of overly large breasts.

Liposuction

This procedure is used to remove stubborn pockets of fat that may have developed in various areas of the body during pregnancy. Liposuction can enhance overall body contours and create a more sculpted appearance. Commonly addressed areas are the neck, armpit/axilla, bra fat/upper back, arms, abdomen, flanks/love handles, and thighs.

Body Contouring

In addition to liposuction, other body contouring procedures may be included to address specific areas such as the thighs, buttocks, or arms. This helps achieve a more balanced and proportionate figure.

Common Changes To Your Body After Babies

It's important to note that the specific combination of procedures in a mommy makeover can vary based on individual needs and goals. Your mommy makeover consultation with Dr. John Burns is crucial to determining the most appropriate and effective combination of procedures for each patient.

Breast Size & Volume Change

Many women experience an increase in breast size and volume during pregnancy as the mammary glands enlarge in preparation for breastfeeding. After breastfeeding or weaning, the breasts may decrease in size, leading to changes in volume and fullness leading to a deflated appearance.

Breast Sag (Ptosis)

The stretching of the skin and ligaments during pregnancy, along with the effects of breastfeeding, can contribute to breast sagging. The loss of elasticity in the skin and supporting structures can result in a less youthful and lifted appearance.

Changes in Breast Shape

The combination of increased volume during pregnancy and potential loss of volume post-breastfeeding can alter the overall shape of the breasts. This can lead to a loss of upper breast fullness and changes in contour. The breasts can appear both deflated and droopy.

Enlarged +/- Areola

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause the areolas (the darker skin surrounding the nipples) to enlarge and darken. These changes may persist to varying degrees even after breastfeeding.

Stretchmarks

Rapid growth of the breasts during pregnancy can lead to the development of stretch marks on the skin. While they may fade over time, they often remain visible.

Changes In Nipple Appearance

Nipples may experience changes in size, shape, and color during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Some women may also experience temporary or permanent nipple sensitivity. The nipples often appear elongated leading to difficulty hiding them in normal clothing.

Body Changes

Pregnancy can bring about significant changes to the abdominal area, both during the gestation period and postpartum. Common changes in the abdomen after pregnancy include:

Stretching of Abdominal Muscles

Many women experience an increase in breast size and volume during pregnancy as the mammary glands enlarge in preparation for breastfeeding. After breastfeeding or weaning, the breast0s may decrease in size, leading to changes in volume and fullness leading to a deflated appearance.

Loose Skin

As the abdomen expands during pregnancy, the skin stretches to accommodate the growing baby. After childbirth, the skin may not always fully retract, leading to loose or sagging skin around the abdomen. This stretched skin is most common in the lower abdomen or around the belly button.

Stretchmarks

Rapid stretching of the skin can result in the development of stretch marks, which are reddish or purplish lines that eventually fade to a lighter color. These marks may appear on the abdomen and other areas where the skin has been stretched. Stretch marks are most common on the lower abdomen or around the belly button.

Changes in Fat Distribution

Even after childbirth, some women may find it challenging to lose excess fat in the midsection. Even when a woman achieves her pre-pregnancy weight, the fat deposition around the abdomen can persist.

Changes in Fat Distribution

In cases where a c-section delivery is performed, a surgical incision is made on the abdomen, resulting in a scar. It is not uncommon for the c-section scar to form a small shelf where the skin an0d fat of the lower abdomen falls over the scar creating an unattractive overhang.

Weakend Pelvic Floor Muscles

Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, contributing to issues like urinary incontinence and a feeling of pelvic laxity.

Weight Gain +/- Weight Loss

If a woman can achieve her pre-pregnancy weight, the appearance of her body will undoubtedly be much different. Even at a goal weight, there is likely to be persistent fat deposition around the waist and lower abdomen, a loss of abdomin0al contour due to rectus diastasis, and a more square or rectangular appearance of the abdomen and waist. There is only so much that women can do with the excess skin and stretched-out muscles. No amount of diet or exercise can fix either of these issues.

What's Included In A Mommy Makeover?

Types of Breast Surgeries

It is critical to identify the goals when considering breast surgery as part of a mommy makeover. Breast measurements can help determine if a lift, augmentation, or both would give the best result.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a common component of a mommy makeover. During pregnancy, the breasts often change in size, shape, and volume. Breastfeeding further impacts the breast's appearance such as sagging or loss of fullness. Breast augmentation, involving the use of implants or via fat transfer, is integrated into a mommy makeover to enhance and restore breast volume, achieving a more youthful and proportionate appearance. Whether aiming to increase breast size, improve symmetry, or rejuvenate the overall contour, breast augmentation is customized to meet individual goals.

Breast Aug with Implants

Breast augmentation with implants involves the placement of silicone or saline implants beneath the breast tissue or chest muscles to achieve the desired level of fullness and symmetry. The choice between silicone and saline implants, as well as the specific implant size and shape, is often based on individual preferences. During your breast augmentation, Dr. Burns carefully positions the implants to achieve a natural-looking result in alignment with your goals.

Breast augmentation with implants is commonly chosen by women seeking to improve breast volume lost due to factors like pregnancy, weight loss, or aging, as well as those desiring enhanced overall breast aesthetics. Implants provide a reliable, reproducible, and safe option for adding volume to the breasts.

Breast Augmentation with Fat

Breast augmentation with fat transfer offers a natural alternative to traditional breast implants. The procedure involves two main steps: liposuction to harvest excess fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, and then the purified fat is injected into the breasts to increase the size of the breasts while improving the overall breast aesthetic.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer is often chosen by individuals who prefer a more subtle enhancement, want to avoid artificial implants or desire simultaneous body contouring through liposuction. While it may provide a natural look and feel, the amount of augmentation achievable with fat transfer is generally more modest compared to traditional breast implants. Generally only about one cup size is achievable with fat transfer. The size increase is also variable as not all of the fat will survive.

Breast Aug with Breast Lift

After pregnancy and childbirth, most women experience some degree of breast deflation and skin sag. For women who are battling both the appearance and lack of self-confidence that comes with both, a breast lift with implants may be a viable solution.

During the procedure, Dr. Burns places breast implants to both lift and fill the breasts while adding perk and rejuvenation. The breast lift also repositions th0e nipple-areola complex, removing excess skin, and tightening the surrounding breast tissue.

Standalone Breast Lift

Some women have ample breast volume and are primarily dealing with low hanging or stretched breast tissue. They will oftentimes have enlarged areolas that also need to be addressed. 0

A mastopexy involves the removal of excess skin, reshaping of the breast tissue, and repositioning of the nipple-areola complex to achieve a more youthful and elevated position.

There are three primary breast lift techniques indicated by the degree of breast ptosis.  In most cases, Dr. Burns will perform a full breast lift with anchor-incision because it gives the best result both short term and longterm. Breast Reduction

A breast reduction will reduce the size of overly large breasts for women who need size-appropriate and often more comfortable result.

Large breasts (macromastia) refers to a condition characterized by abnormally large breasts in proportion to a person's body. Women with macromastia often endure physical discomfort attributed to the excessive weight of their breasts, resulting in chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. Women who see us for breast reduction also complain of skin rashes, shoulder grooves, and posture changes.

The goal of breast reduction is twofold: (1) to improve the overall shape of the breasts via a breast lift and (2) to improve the above physical conditions by reducing the size of the breasts.

Corset Tummy Tuck by Top Plastic Surgeon, Dr. John Burns.png__PID:eead0f10-a0d8-4ecb-99cf-c5868c2b7e4c

The Full Tummy Tuck

A standard tummy tuck addresses excess skin, fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. This procedure is commonly sought by women with significant weight loss, pregnancy, or aging, leading to stretched abdominal muscles and loose, sagging skin.

A standard tummy tuck involves comprehensive abdominal contouring, addressing both the upper and lower abdomen for a thorough transformation. This procedure involves longer incisions, typically extending horizontally from hip to hip along the lower abdomen, and may include an additional incision around the belly button.

While a standard tummy tuck is a more extensive procedure with a longer recovery period compared to a mini tummy tuck, it provides comprehensive results for individuals seeking significant improvement in abdominal contour and muscle tone.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck, also known as a lower body lift goes beyond the scope of a standard tummy tuck. This surgery addresses excess skin, fat, and laxity not only in the abdominal area but also extends around the sides and lower back. It is particularly suitable for individuals who have undergone significant weight loss or have excess skin and tissue around the entire midsection.

An extended tummy tuck has more extensive incisions, encircling the waist like a belt, to remove excess skin and tissue not only from the front but also from the sides and lower back. This procedure involves full abdominal contouring, targeting excess skin, fat, and weakened muscles, with the potential tightening of abdominal muscles for a more toned look. The extended incisions allow effective contouring of the love handles and lower back areas, offering a comprehensive body contouring effect. Additionally, in some instances, an extended tummy tuck may involve lifting and reshaping the buttocks, designing an overall enhancement of the lower body's appearance.

Non-surgical treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, or cosmetic facial procedures like a facelift or eyelid surgery can be considered to address signs of aging and restore a more youthful appearance.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Procedures like labiaplasty or vaginoplasty may be included to address changes in the vaginal area that can occur due to childbirth. This is a very common add-on procedure that greatly improves the appearance and quality of life.

It's important to note that the combination of procedures in a mommy makeover is highly individualized. The specific treatments chosen will depend on the patient's concerns, overall health, and aesthetic goals.

The Corset Tummy Tuck Plication Technique Is Applied To All Tummy Tucks with
Dr. John Burns MD.

Most plastic surgeons tighten the abdominal muscles in the midline from the rib cage to the pubic area. While this gives a very good result, further tightening can often be achieved by tightening the muscles laterally as well as using a “corset” technique where the oblique muscles are tightened on each side so the 3 vectors are used instead of just one. This 3 vector technique pulls the waist in giving a more “snatched” appearance to the waist and a more hourglass shape to the waist.

Liposuction 360 Comes Standard with
Our Tummy Tucks

Liposuction is a critical component of all abdominal contouring procedures. The torso should be considered in 3 dimensions and using liposuction to further sculpt the waist limits the size or length of the abdominal scar.

Liposuction 360 refers to the concept of circumferential liposuction. The entire abdomen is liposuction before skin removal. The abdominal sides, love handles, lower back, upper back, and armpit or axilla are included in liposuction 360.

In most patients, VASER® or ultrasound liposuction is incorporated in liposuction 360. VASER® Liposuction, or VASER® lipo, is an advanced cosmetic surgical procedure that uses ultrasound technology to selectively break down and remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. VASER® stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Unlike traditional liposuction, which uses manual movements to break up fat cells, VASER® liposuction employs ultrasound energy to target and emulsify fat cells, making them easier to remove.

VASER® Lipo

VASER® Liposuction is a procedure that uses local anesthesia to numb the area being treated. First, a solution is infused to help minimize blood loss and prepare the fat for removal. Then, a small probe emits ultrasonic waves, breaking down and liquefying fat cells while protecting surrounding tissues. The liquefied fat is removed using a small suction tool, allowing for precise and controlled fat removal. Vaser t-10echnology is known for its ability to sculpt and shape the treated area for the desired look. Recovery is typically shorter than traditional liposuction because the ultrasound technology minimizes trauma to surrounding tissues.

VASER® Liposuction is often chosen for its ability to target specific areas with greater precision and potentially result in less bruising and discomfort compared to traditional liposuction.

Candidates For Mommy Makeover Surgery

Ask The Mommy Makeover Expert- Dr. John Burns MD- Dallas Mommy Makeover Surgeon.png__PID:458c25d3-8e0d-4090-8d5f-8089ba412d2c

To be a good candidate for a mommy makeover, it's important to be in good overall health and have well-managed pre-existing medical conditions. Ideally, candidates should be at or near their target weight, as significant weight changes after the surgery can impact results. Women should wait until they have completed family planning and fully recovered from childbirth and breastfeeding before considering the procedure.

Realistic expectations are crucial, understanding that while significant improvements are possible, perfection is not guaranteed. Emotional well-being matters, and candidates should be in a stable mental state with realistic expectations about recovery. Commitment to a healthy lifestyle, including exercise and a balanced diet, is essential for maintaining long-term results. Being a non-smoker or willing to quit for a specific period before and after the procedure is also important to minimize risks and support healing.

How Many Procedures Can I Combine For My Mommy Makeover Surgery?

The number of procedures that can be combined for a mommy makeover depends on various factors, including the specific procedures chosen, the extent of correction needed, the patient's overall health, and the surgeon's recommendations. A mommy makeover is typically a combination of cosmetic procedures designed to address the physical changes that occur in a woman's body after pregnancy and childbirth.

When deciding how many procedures to combine, safety is the main concern. Having multiple procedures in one surgery can increase the time spent in surgery, affecting anesthesia, recovery, and possible complications. It's recommended to keep surgical time under 6 hours with minimal blood loss for safety. Recovery may be longer and more challenging when combining procedures, so patients should be ready for a comprehensive recovery plan. A board-certified plastic surgeon will assess the patient's health, history, and goals, making recommendations for what can be safely achieved in one session. Patient preferences matter too; some may prefer staged procedures for a more manageable recovery. If procedures need to be split, it's important to consider what's most important to the patient and what needs to be done together for the best result, like combining liposuction with a BBL or fat transfer.

What Is The Recovery Process Like?

The recovery time for a mommy makeover can vary depending on the specific procedures performed, the extent of correction, and individual factors such as overall health and healing abilities. Since a mommy makeover typically involves a combination of cosmetic surgeries, the recovery process is more comprehensive compared to undergoing a single procedure. Here are some general guidelines for the recovery timeline:

Immediate Postoperative Period (First Few Days)

The initial days after surgery involve the immediate postoperative period. Patients may experience discomfort, swelling, bruising, and fatigue during this time. Pain medication and proper rest are typically prescribed to manage pain and aid in recovery.

First Week

During the first week, patients are encouraged to take it easy and avoid strenuous activities. Patients may need assistance with daily tasks, and the use of compression garments to reduce swelling is common. Follow-up appointments with the surgeon are usually scheduled to monitor healing.

Two to Six Weeks

Most patients can return to light activities and work within two to six weeks, depending on the extent of surgery. However, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting may need to be postponed for a more extended period, often up to six weeks or as advised by the surgeon.

Six Weeks To Three Months

While many patients are back to their normal routine within a few weeks, full recovery and resolution of swelling may take several months. During this time, the final results of the procedures become more apparent.

Longterm

Patients should continue to follow the postoperative instructions provided by their surgeon, including wearing compression garments as directed and attending follow-up appointments. Long-term, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet can contribute to sustaining the results achieved through a mommy makeover.

It's crucial for patients to closely follow their surgeon's postoperative care instructions and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Recovery experiences can vary, and individual factors such as overall health, adherence to postoperative instructions, and the specific procedures performed can influence the recovery timeline.

Treatments That Help

Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage therapy, also known as lymphatic drainage massage, is a therapeutic technique that focuses on promoting the natural drainage of the lymphatic system. This type of massage is often considered after cosmetic surgeries, including mommy makeover procedures, to help reduce swelling, improve circulation, and enhance the overall healing process. Dr. Burns will provide a referral to a licensed massage therapist specializing in lymphatic massage. This is optional for patients during their recovery.

Dr. Burns will provide a referral to a licensed massage therapist specializing in lymphatic massage. This is optional for patients during their recovery.

Endermologie

Endermologie is a non-invasive mechanical massage therapy designed to target and improve the appearance of cellulite and promote overall-30 skin health. Developed in France in the 1980s, endermologie involves the use of a device equipped with motorized rollers and suction to gently massage, aiding in the removal of toxins and excess fluids and reducing swelling.

Endermologie sessions typically last around 30 to 45 minutes and are administered by trained practitioners. Multiple sessions are usually recommended for optimal results. Dr. Burns practice includes Endermologie which is available in post-surgical packages at EpiCentre Skincare and Laser Center

Scar Therapy

Every individual's healing process is unique, and scar outcomes can vary. Genetics, skin type, and individual healing characteristics all play a role in how scars develop. It's essential to follow the postoperative care instructions provided by the surgeon and attend follow-up appointments to monitor the healing progress.

When Will I See My Final Results?

The timeline for seeing the final results after a mommy makeover can vary based on several factors, including the specific procedures performed, individual healing patterns, and how the body responds to surgery. While some improvements will be noticeable in the early weeks, achieving the final, settled results may take several months to a year or more.

After a mommy makeover, you'll notice immediate improvements like enhanced breast shape and a flatter abdomen once swelling and bruising subside. Swelling is a natural part of recovery, mostly resolving in weeks to months, with scars evolving from red and raised to faded and flattened over months to years.

Final contouring, including breast implants settling and skin tightening, occurs within months to a year. Full healing may take up to a year or more, varying by individual. Patients who are compliant with post-care, and those who adopt adjunct therapies such as endermologie, lymphatic massage, and scar therapy will accelerate their healing journey.

It's essential to note that individual healing experiences can vary, and some patients may see final results sooner or later than the general timeline suggests. Following the postoperative care instructions provided by the surgeon, attending follow-up appointments, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can contribute to optimal healing and long-term results. Additionally, patience is key as the body continues to adjust and settle into its final state over time. Once healed maintaining the results with diet and exercise is critical for the long term success of the procedure.

When can I work out after a corset tummy tuck?

Dr. Burns advises taking one month off from exercise. At one month, light exercise can be resumed with no weight lifting or high impact bouncing. Examples of this type of exercise is walking on a treadmill at an incline, stair climbing, elliptical trainer, or spin/stationary bike. Patients should continue to avoid strenuous activities until cleared.

At 2 months post-op, patients can begin lightweight toning exercises using light weight and high repetition type movements.

By 3 months patients can begin heavier lifting and core exercises. Once the core ab muscles are fully healed you’ll be stronger than ever!

Mommy Makeover FAQs

How soon after delivery can I have a mommy makeover?

There is no strict "one-size-fits-all" timeline. We generally advise you wait 6 months- 1 year after giving birth before undergoing a mommy makeover. This timeframe allows for a more accurate assessment of the body's post-pregnancy changes and ensures a safer and more effective surgical outcome.

Does insurance cover a mommy makeover?

In general, medical insurance does not cover elective cosmetic procedures, including mommy makeovers. Mommy makeovers typically involve cosmetic surgeries such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction, which are considered elective and performed for aesthetic reasons rather than medical necessity. In extreme cases, breast reduction can be done under insurance. Dr. Burns' practice does not participate in insurance-driven surgeries.

How much is a mommy makoever in Dallas, Texas?

The cost of a mommy makeover can vary widely based on several factors, including the specific procedures performed, the surgeon's experience and expertise, the geographical location of the practice, facility fees, anesthesia fees, and any additional costs such as medications, breast implants, or additional garments.

Mommy makeover costs in Dr. Burns'  practice can range from approximately $18,000 for a breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tuck to about $25,000 or more if additional procedures are utilized such as a BBL. However, these figures are estimates and can vary significantly depending on individual circumstances.

It's crucial to consider that the cost should not be the sole determining factor when choosing a plastic surgeon. The experience, qualifications, and reputation of the surgeon, as well as the surgical facility's accreditation, and a board-certified anesthesiologist are equally important factors to ensure a safe and successful outcome.

What will my scars look like?

Once fully healed, your surgical scars should match the tone of your skin. If the appearance of your scars is of significant concern, we strongly recommend you invest in scar therapy (both topical and in-office laser therapy) for optimal results.

How long will the surgery take?

A mommy makeover takes between 3 and 6 hours from start to finish depending on several factors including the number and complexity of the procedures and the size of the patient. Dr. Burns will limit the total time to less than 6 hours for safety reasons. Smaller patients who just need a simple breast augmentation and mini tummy tuck might take less than 3 hours while larger patients who need more extensive breast and body contouring may require the full 6 hours.

Can I drive home after?

Most patients take advantage of the on-site recovery center located in Dr. Burns’ office. The facility has full-time nursing care to aid in initial post-op care. There is additional space for a travel companion to accompany out-of-town patients, which many find useful as they travel back home for the remainder of their recovery. The facility is located adjacent to Dr. Burns’ surgical center for convenience and safety.

You will not be allowed to drive yourself home after surgery. We advise you to arrange to have someone drive you home after your procedures.  It is recommended that patients have a caregiver for the first several days after the procedure to assist with ambulation and activities of daily living.

Can a BBL be done at the same time?

Combining a BBL with a tummy tuck can be advantageous because rather than discarding the fat, we can repurpose it to add shape and projection to the buttocks and hip dips. Keep in mind that compliance with our recovery protocol is key.  We stress that our patients follow their post-op care diligently, including sitting and sleeping restrictions.

How much weight will I lose after surgery?

A mommy makeover is not a weight loss procedure as the tissue and fat removed does not weigh much. This is a body contouring procedure where the shape of your body will be dramatically improved even if your weight doesn’t change much.

Patients may even temporarily gain weight after surgery due to retained fluid, swelling, and lack of exercise. Most patients will return to their pre-surgery weight after about a month. After surgery, many patients feel better about their appearance and find it more enjoyable to exercise and be seen.

Maintaining the results of a mommy makeover will require proper diet and exercise. Showing off your new body is always a good motivator.

Should I have breast and tummy tuck done in Mexico?

Considering medical tourism? It does offer access to affordable procedures, but here are some things to keep in mind:

-Quality Varies: Healthcare standards differ between countries, affecting safety.
-Regulations Differ: Oversight variations impact safety, practitioner qualifications, and infection control.
-Language Challenges: Communicating for consent and post-op care might be tricky due to language barriers.
-Follow-Up Hurdles: Organizing follow-up care, especially for complications, can be challenging.
-Cultural Mix: Different medical practices and patient expectations may lead to misunderstandings.
-Travel Risks: Long-distance travel brings risks, like complications, delays, and impact on recovery.
-Legal Complexities: Seeking legal action abroad for malpractice might be challenging.
-Consent Confusion: Language barriers may compromise understanding of procedure risks and benefits.
-Hidden Costs: While upfront costs may seem lower, consider travel, accommodation, and unexpected expenses.

Before diving in, do your homework. Research your destination, healthcare providers, and facilities. Seek advice from reputable professionals, and think through the entire journey, from pre-op to recovery. It's essential to be aware and prepared.

How long should I wait to have sex?

Generally, it is recommended to wait about 2 weeks before engaging in sexual activity. Every healing journey is unique, so please ask our clinic nurse if you have a specific question.  It's also important to communicate with your partner and make sure you feel comfortable before resuming sexual activity.

Can I finance a mommy makeover?

Yes, you can finance your mommy makeover. We offer simple third party financing options through CareCredit, PatientFi, or Alphaeon. Many of these plans offer no interest options. We are happy to help you guide you through the process during your consultation.
