What Is Botox?

Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is widely used in both medical and cosmetic treatments.

In cosmetic applications, Botox is injected into specific facial muscles to temporarily paralyze them, which reduces the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, particularly on the forehead, around the eyes (crow's feet), and between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Medically, Botox is used to treat a variety of conditions such as chronic migraines, muscle spasms, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and certain bladder disorders. The effects of Botox injections typically last for three to six months, after which the treatment can be repeated.

Botox is a medical treatment classified as a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles by blocking a chemical reaction between nerves and muscles. While Botox is the most popular and “brand name” neuromodulator there are other medications such as Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify, and Jeuveau.

Common Misconceptions About Botox

Common misconceptions about Botox often stem from misunderstandings about its safety, effects, and usage. One prevalent myth is that Botox is unsafe or toxic; however, when administered by qualified professionals in appropriate doses, Botox is safe and FDA-approved for both cosmetic and medical use.

Another misconception is that Botox will result in a "frozen" or unnatural look. When properly injected, Botox can produce subtle, natural-looking results that soften wrinkles without hindering facial expressions. While some believe Botox is only for older individuals, it is increasingly used by younger people as a preventative against wrinkle formation. Additionally, there is a misconception that Botox is only for women, despite its growing popularity among men for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes.

Lastly, some assume Botox is a permanent solution, while its effects are temporary, typically lasting three to six months, requiring repeat treatments to maintain the desired appearance or medical benefit.

Meet Our Botox Expert: Laura Stelk DNP-C

Laura Stelk, NP-C is our advanced practice nurse injector. She has years of experience in plastic surgery working in the operating room while completing her doctorate as a nurse practitioner at Baylor University. Laura is passionate about aesthetics and has dedicated her practice to Botox, Filler injections, and other non-invasive rejuvenation procedures.

The Importance Of Choosing A Qualified And Experienced Practitioner

Botox and filler injections can be found at numerous medical spas, but it's important to be cautious as these establishments are often poorly regulated and lack proper supervision. It cannot be stressed enough that these treatments are medical procedures requiring experience and in-depth knowledge of anatomy. Many providers without proper qualifications only attend short courses and follow generic protocols.

You can ensure your safety and efficacy of treatment by using a qualified practitioner capable of conducting an individual facial analysis, precise placement, and accurate dosing.

Seek treatment in a reputable medical office rather than a loosely supervised medical spa. You'll have peace of mind knowing that you are under the supervision of a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

The Difference Between A "Tweakment" and A "Full Correction"
Botox Treatment

Botox dosing is critical in achieving the desired result. Many patients want a natural result with more movement and are willing to live with some subtle wrinkles to achieve a natural result. This endpoint typically requires a few units of Botox so that the muscle is relaxed to a lesser degree. In these more subtle treatments, botox lasts about 3 months. Generally, a "tweakment" or a more natural Botox result requires about 25 - 35 units.

Many patients desire a more aggressive treatment where more units of Botox are used to relax the muscles of facial expression. In these cases, the end goal is to eliminate wrinkles giving a smoother look with no wrinkles. This approach lasts longer (about 4 months), and requires about 50 - 75 units depending on how many areas are treated.
