Botox in your 20s?
When is the right time to start Botox? It's a question I'm often asked. In 2015, more than 6.7 million Botox procedures were performed, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, making it the most common minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, with fillers a distant second. Instead of increasing older patients seeking out Botox treatment for lines and wrinkles, one of the fastest growing groups seeking Botox are patients in their 20s. The goal for this group is to prevent a wrinkle from forming and stay ahead of the aging curve.
Botox is a medication that is precisely injected into muscles of facial expression to partially or completely prevent these muscles from contracting. If your skin is like a piece of paper, the more your crinkle that paper, the more lines or wrinkles there will be. For younger patients, preventing the wrinkle from ever forming maintains a youthful appearance much longer and delays the aging process. And the research backs this idea up. One study followed twin sisters over a 13-year period, during which one received Botox two to three times per year and the other only got it twice. You can probably guess the result: The regularly treated twin had less noticeable facial lines and crow’s feet.
In younger patients, Botox is injected differently than in older patients with more difficult wrinkles to correct.
In younger patients, Botox is injected in smaller quantities spaced farther apart to give a much softer, relaxed look rather than a frozen one. A younger patient will need fewer units per treatment and fewer treatments per year. It is important to seek out a Board Certified Physician to administer Botox who is intimately familiar with facial anatomy. With online deals and poorly regulated Botox clinics, it can be tempting to go for the cheapest option. But don’t! Only board-certified dermatologists and plastic surgeons should administer Botox. Botox should also be used in tandem with a medically based skin care regimine including sunscreen. Using Botox to prevent wrinkles can be an effective way to hold off premature aging and look younger well beyond your 20s.
