Mommy Makeover

Pregnancy and nursing, much like being a mom in general, can take a toll on a woman’s body. Most mothers put the needs of their family before themselves, but moms deserve to feel good about themselves too! That’s where the mommy makeover comes in.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of various plastic surgery procedures designed with the post-pregnancy body in mind. Many areas of a woman’s body go through major changes during pregnancy and while nursing. Most effects can be seen in the breasts, abdomen, love handles, hips and thighs. The combination of procedures such as a breast augmentation or lift, tummy tuck or liposuction are what make up a mommy makeover.

Explore the Procedures

The changes that happen to the body during pregnancy are as individual as a woman is herself. But, due to the body growing and stretching, there is often some lasting damage. With pregnancy, the breasts will enlarge during lactation and will shrink to a smaller size once breastfeeding is complete. In addition, the breast skin — which stretches to accommodate the larger breast — will not contract, leaving the breasts looking flat and ptotic (saggy). By restoring volume to the breast with an implant, a simple breast augmentation can restore the appearance of the breast. In more severe cases, a breast lift or an augmentation combined with a breast lift may be necessary to restore the breast shape and size.

During pregnancy, the abdominal skin and muscles can become stretched beyond their ability to recoil. The excess skin and fat below the belly button and above the pubic area can be removed with a tummy tuck. The abdominal muscles can also be tightened to narrow the waist and give the appearance of an hourglass body shape. Finally, liposuction can be used to remove unwanted fat from the love handles (flanks), hips and thighs to sculpt and contour the body. A mommy makeover procedure in Dallas will leave mom feeling brand new!

Who is a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

In order to be a good candidate for the mommy makeover, a woman should fulfill most (if not all) of the following criteria.

  • Finished having children
  • Done breastfeeding for at least 6 months

Expectations

Each of the procedures involved in a mommy makeover is an outpatient surgery and the whole process can take anywhere between two and six hours, depending on how many areas you are having treated. You will be given local anesthesia for sedation during your surgery. Upon the conclusion of your procedure, expect temporary swelling, bruising and some pain. After your mommy makeover, you’ll be instructed to wear conforming garments to avoid lumpiness or contour irregularities and help with discomfort.

Patients are advised not to do any lifting following the procedure, including carrying groceries or picking up children. This can be especially tough for a mom, so lean on your support system to help out with daily chores until your recovery is complete!

Risks include pain, bleeding, infection and contour irregularity in rare cases. Most patients are able to return to work within two weeks and are cleared for strenuous activity within four to six weeks. Expect your swelling to minimize and to reach your final appearance about two months after your procedure. Enjoy the new you!

Body Contouring Plastic Surgery and Your BMI

Peer reviewed plastic surgery research indicates that the complication rates from breast and body contouring plastic surgery are much lower if your Body Mass Index is in the normal range.  For obese or morbidly patients, complication rates such as deep venous thrombosis, wound healing problems, and infection are much higher.  We encourage all of our patient to know their BMI and if at all possible achieve a normal BMI or at least < 30 before embarking on elective cosmetic surgery.
