Mommy makeover is a term describing various plastic surgery procedures designed to address changes in the post pregnancy body:  breasts, abdomen, love handles (flanks), hips, and thighs.  Any combination of procedures such as breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, or liposuction can be referred to as a mommy makeover.

With pregnancy, the breasts will enlarge during lactation and after breastfeeding will shrink to a smaller size. In addition, the breast skin which stretches to accommodate the larger breast will not contract leaving the breasts both flat and ptotic (saggy). By restoring needed volume to the breast with a breast implant, simple breast augmentation can restore the appearance of the breast. In more severe cases, a breast lift or an augmentation combined with a breast lift may be necessary to restore the breast shape and size.

During pregnancy, the abdominal skin and muscles can become stretched beyond their ability to recoil. The skin and fat below the belly button and above the pubic area can be removed with a tummy tuck. The abdominal muscles can also be tightened to narrow the waist and give a more hourglass body shape.

Finally, liposuction can be used to remove unwanted fat from the love handles (flanks), hips, and thighs to sculpt and contour the body.

Body Contouring Plastic Surgery and Your BMI

Peer reviewed plastic surgery research indicates that the complication rates from breast and body contouring plastic surgery are much lower if your Body Mass Index is in the normal range.  For obese or morbidly patients, complication rates such as deep venous thrombosis, wound healing problems, and infection are much higher.  We encourage all of our patient to know their BMI and if at all possible achieve a normal BMI before embarking on elective cosmetic surgery.

To assist our patients with knowing and managing their BMI, we recommend the Taking Measures App

TakingMeasures is a free application designed to provide education and awareness about metabolic health for users of all ages at home or on the go. This interactive, educational tool calculates users’ Body Mass Index, or BMI, explains what this number means, its effects on overall health, and tracks users’ BMI history. The application includes a survey that helps users assess their readiness to change and provides customized tips on nutrition and physical activity. Taking Measures also includes a fun and exciting game called “Percy’s Pick-e-plate Challenge” where users learn about healthy eating by helping Percy prepare healthy meals. This application is not intended to provide a diagnosis and all users should visit their health care professional for a full examination.
