Tips For Making Your Injectables Last Longer
Injectable treatments, such as Botox and dermal fillers, have become immensely popular for their ability to provide a youthful, rejuvenated appearance with minimal downtime. In our plastic surgery practice, we're often asked how to maximize the longevity of cosmetic injectables.
We regularly stress the importance of following specific guidelines before and after your injectable appointment to help you get the most out of your injectables and ensure your results last as long as possible! We've included some important details below.
What Makes Your Injectable Results Fade Over Time?
Neurotoxins such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are derived from botulinum toxin, a natural substance produced by bacteria. Despite sounding intimidating, these neurotoxins, along with dermal fillers containing naturally occurring ingredients like collagen and hyaluronic acid, are gradually reabsorbed by the body over time. The duration for which these substances remain effective varies depending on several factors.
Location of the Injection:
Neurotoxins tend to wear off more quickly in highly active facial areas such as the forehead, around the eyes, and areas involved in scowling. That said, they last longer in less mobile areas with thinner muscles. For fillers, the most active areas of the face, like the mouth and lips, will need little touch-ups more frequently, whereas fillers placed deeper in the cheeks or tear troughs, positioned on the bone beneath the muscles, tend to last longer.
Larger doses and multiple injections placed closely together tend to maintain their effects longer than smaller doses spread over a larger area.
The Dosage Of Injection

That said, they last longer in less mobile areas with thinner muscles. The Type Of Neurotoxin Or Filler Used
Fillers are designed with varying properties to achieve different effects, such as filling fine lines or adding volume to the bone structure. Consequently, their integration into the appropriate tissue and the rate at which they are reabsorbed can range from 4 months to 2 years. Neurotoxins, although essentially the same toxin, can have different proteins surrounding them. Some individuals metabolize certain brands of neurotoxins more quickly than others, and switching brands periodically might be necessary to achieve the desired results.
Environmental Factors
UV radiation, air pollution, smoking, and alcohol consumption also influence how long the results last. Damage from free radicals accelerates skin aging, diminishing the effects of Botox or fillers. Additionally, products applied to the areas of injection can impact the longevity of these treatments.
Complimentary ConsultPreparing For Your Appointment
The most important thing to remember before cosmetic injections of any kind is to continue the use of blood-thinning medications, alcohol, and supplements at least 24 hours before your appointment. Doing so will reduce your risk of bruising and swelling during and after your injectable appointment. Here's a short list to reference when considering what you might need to discontinue temporarily:
-Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, and Fish Oil
Our practice recommends discontinuing these for 1-2 weeks at minimum for best results.
The First Day After Treatment
What you do immediately following your treatment can affect how well your botox and injectable fillers work and how long they last:
1. Avoid Heavy Exercise: Intense physical activity can increase blood flow and potentially cause the injected material to migrate from the targeted area. Stick to light activities for the first 24 hours.
2. Avoid Flying: Air travel within 24-48 hours post-treatment can cause changes in air pressure, potentially leading to unwanted diffusion of Botox.
3. Avoid Bending Over: Activities like yoga, where your head is often down, can also increase the risk of the injectable migrating from the treated area.
4. Avoid Smoking and Excess Sun Exposure: Both smoking and sun exposure can accelerate the breakdown of injectables. Use sunscreen daily and avoid tanning beds.
Skin Care and Hydration
Taking care of your skin is crucial for prolonging the effects of injectables:
1. Use Protective and Hydrating Skin Care Products: Incorporate products that protect and hydrate your skin. Look for serums with hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and peptides, which can help maintain skin health and prolong the effects of your injectables.
2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated and can help extend the life of dermal fillers, which are often made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that binds water.
Consistent Maintenance
Consistency is key when it comes to injectable treatments:
1. Schedule Regular Appointments: For Botox, plan on scheduling maintenance appointments every 3-4 months. This regularity helps maintain results and prevents wrinkles from fully re-forming.
2. Consider Supplements: Some studies suggest that taking zinc supplements can prolong the effects of Botox. Consult with your healthcare provider before adding any supplements to your routine.
Complementary Treatments
Combining your injectables with other treatments can enhance and extend your results:
1. Chemical Peels, Lasers, and Broad Band Light (BBL): These treatments can improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance, complementing the effects of Botox and fillers.
2. Microneedling: This procedure promotes collagen production and can improve the longevity of dermal fillers.Skin Tightening Devices: Treatments like Sofwave or Morpheus 8, which use ultrasound and radiofrequency technologies, can tighten the skin and enhance the results of injectables.
Protecting Your Investment Is Worth It
By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your Botox and dermal filler treatments are maximized Proper preparation, post-treatment care, consistent maintenance, and complementary treatments are all part of a comprehensive approach to maximizing the benefits of Botox and dermal fillers. Always start with a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon or skilled cosmetic injector who can provide you with the best result possible.
