The Mommy Makeover Diary: Will Your Breasts Look Great With Just A Lift?
Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding—they're beautiful parts of motherhood, but they can leave lasting changes on your body. For many moms, the breasts take the brunt of these changes, often losing their youthful shape and position. If you’re a mom of multiples or simply feel your breasts aren’t what they used to be, you might be considering a mommy makeover to restore your confidence.
A mommy makeover is a customized set of procedures designed to help you feel like yourself again after having kids. Often, this includes a tummy tuck and liposuction to address abdominal changes, but for many women, the biggest decision revolves around their breasts: Do you need a lift, implants, or both?
Let’s break it down so you can start planning your journey to the body you deserve.
Understanding Breast Aesthetics
When we talk about “aesthetic” breasts, it’s about more than size. It’s also about shape, proportion, and position. An ideal breast has the nipple resting above the crease under your breast (the inframammary fold) and aligns with the midline of your upper arm. Think of an equilateral triangle: the base is the line connecting both nipples, and the tip is at the hollow of your collarbone. After pregnancy and breastfeeding, this triangle often loses its symmetry.
Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Breast lift surgery involves repositioning and reshaping. It’s ideal if you’re happy with your breast size but feel like they’ve shifted south with breastfeeding and weight loss. During the procedure, excess skin is removed, and the breast tissue and nipple are repositioned to their ideal height. While this can leave visible scars, with good post-op care, they typically fade to faint lines that are easy to conceal even in low-cut tops.

Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is best when you want more volume or fullness, particularly in the upper part of the breast. Breast implants can make breasts look lifted by filling out deflated tissue, but if there’s significant sagging (what we call ptosis), an implant alone won’t solve the problem.

When You Might Need Both
If you’ve lost volume and have noticeable sagging, combining a lift with implants might be your best option. Think of it this way: the lift restores shape and position, while the implants restore fullness and contour. It’s a one-two punch that addresses multiple concerns at once.
During surgery, I use a temporary “sizer” implant to ensure the final result matches your vision without overstretching the skin. I also recommend using supportive mesh (like Galaflex or Durasorb) as an “internal bra” to reduce the risk of complications like bottoming out.

Recovery: What Moms Need to Know
Here’s where it’s important to plan ahead. As a mom, you’re probably the center of your household, but recovering from surgery will require you to hit pause on some of your usual responsibilities.
Help at Home
Childcare: Arrange for someone to help with younger kids, especially during the first two weeks. You won’t be able to lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk, which means no carrying toddlers or picking up toys off the floor.
Meals: Prepping meals in advance or delegating cooking duties can be a lifesaver.
Household Chores: Don’t be afraid to ask for help with laundry, dishes, and tidying up.
Physical Recovery
-Expect to feel tightness and swelling in your chest for the first few weeks. This is normal as your body adjusts to the changes.
-Most moms can return to light activities within a week or two, but exercise and heavy lifting need to wait 4-6 weeks.
-If you’ve had implants, you’ll wear a surgical bra to provide support as your breasts heal.
Emotional Recovery
It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions after surgery. You might be thrilled with your results but also feel a little overwhelmed by the healing process. That’s okay. Give yourself grace and lean on your support system.
What to Expect Long-Term
Your breasts will continue to change as the swelling goes down and scars heal. Final results typically take about six months to fully reveal themselves. With proper care, your lift or augmentation can last many years.
Your Transformation Starts With A Consultation
If you’re mentally ready for surgery and have the support you need to recover, a mommy makeover can be life-changing. Whether it’s a lift, implants, or a combination of both, the goal is to help you feel confident and comfortable in your skin again.
