Many patients complain of having a weak chin or jaw which is out of proportion to their face. Medical photography is extremely important in evaluating the chin and should be standardized precisely. The chin should be evaluated together with the nose and teeth. The surgeon needs to recognize when improperly aligned teeth may complicate the problem. In these cases, the teeth may need to be addressed with orthodontics or oral surgery before augmenting the chin.

For men, the chin is a very important facial feature and the shape of the male chin and jaw is distinctive.  Chin augmentation can be done with an implant or by fracturing the jawbone and moving the chin forward. A well-done genioplasty will be in harmony with the nose and other facial bones. In females, the face should be heart-shaped with the chin understated and elegant. In males, the face should be more square with the chin accenting a stronger jaw line.
